Antique Victorian Shell Cameo Brooch of Arethusa

Antique Cameo Brooch Antique Cameo Brooch: view of back

Antique cameo brooch of the water nymph Arethusa.  Twisted wire brass frame, gilded a bright gold.  My camera made the background shell slightly seem more reddish than it truly is and also muted the brightness of the frame.  Circa 1850.  2-1/4 inches including frame.  There is writing scratched on the back that is mostly illegible, possibly "Cav ref" or "Car..." and the number (date?)1855.  The clasp was replaced with a more secure safety clasp at some point.  There is one very small, very light stress line (only visible when held to the light) and a few small areas of slight darkening on the frame.  Otherwise, like-new condition.
$1000.
